Connecting flights: what to check before you choose

Compare the complete journey: airports, flight sectors, waiting times, baggage arrangements and whether the flights are on one ticket or separate bookings.

Look beyond the number of stops

Two itineraries with one connection can feel very different. Look at the time between flights, the local arrival and departure dates, and whether a terminal or airport change is involved. Ask for the complete proposed itinerary rather than deciding from the first departure and final arrival alone.

There is no single connection time that works for every journey. The airport, airlines, terminals and ticket arrangements all matter. Ask the travel team to check the specific option you are considering and mention any assistance needs or limits on how far you can walk.

Understand the ticket arrangement

Ask whether all flights are included on one ticket or whether the plan contains separate bookings. The practical arrangements and the help available after a disruption can differ. Have the team explain how your proposed journey would be handled if the first flight were delayed.

A separately purchased flight can require collecting luggage and checking in again. An airport change also needs a separate ground journey. Before booking, clarify what the proposed connection involves instead of assuming every transfer happens inside one terminal.

Plan around your travelling party

A family with young children, a traveller needing assistance and someone travelling with cabin luggage alone may prefer different connection options. Tell the team what would make the transfer easier for you. A little more waiting time may be useful in one situation and inconvenient in another.

  • Check the airport code on every flight sector.
  • Ask whether you need to collect baggage and check it in again.
  • Identify any terminal or airport transfer in the plan.
  • Check the local dates, especially for overnight journeys.
  • Ask who to contact if travel is disrupted and what the ticket conditions cover.

Put preferences in the enquiry

State whether your priority is fewer changes, less waiting, avoiding an overnight stop or arriving by a particular date. These are different requests, and telling the team which matters most helps them prepare a more useful comparison. The actual itinerary and conditions are confirmed in the quote.

Questions, answered.

Is the shortest connection always the best choice?

Not necessarily. Compare the transfer arrangements and your own needs as well as the waiting time.

Do separate tickets work like one connecting booking?

Do not assume they do. Ask how baggage, check in and missed connections would be handled for the proposed tickets.

Can I request fewer stops?

Yes. Add that preference to your enquiry. The travel team will discuss suitable options and confirm availability.
