How to compare checked baggage before booking

Compare the number of bags, their weight, cabin baggage and the cost of extras for your exact itinerary, rather than assuming every fare includes the same allowance.

Start with the fare you are actually considering

A baggage allowance belongs to a particular ticket and itinerary. A general airline baggage page is useful background, but the allowance shown in your proposed fare and booking conditions is the information you need to compare. Tell the travel team how many checked bags you expect to take before they prepare the quote.

Separate checked baggage from the items you carry into the cabin. Ask for both allowances in writing, including any weight, size and piece limits shown for the flights you are considering. Do not assume that two fares with the same cabin name include the same luggage.

Compare the whole journey

A trip can contain more than one airline or ticket. Ask which baggage rules apply to the proposed itinerary and whether baggage can be checked through to Colombo or your return destination. If bags must be collected during a connection, that changes the practical plan.

If you need more baggage than the fare includes, compare the total after adding it. Check whether the quote includes that extra allowance or whether it must be arranged separately. Make the comparison for everyone in your group, including children, rather than for just one adult.

What to include in your request

  • Your departure and destination airports, dates and number of travellers.
  • The number of checked bags and approximate weight you expect to take.
  • Any large, fragile or unusual item, described clearly so the team can check the applicable rules.
  • Whether you need cabin luggage in addition to checked bags.
  • Whether any flights in the same journey have already been booked separately.

Before you confirm

Review the allowance, the total quoted price and the conditions for adding more luggage. If your baggage needs change after booking, ask for the current options for your ticket before travelling. Do not rely on a baggage allowance shown for a different route, fare or previous trip.

Questions, answered.

Does every ticket include checked baggage?

Do not assume that it does. Ask the travel team to confirm the allowance included in the specific fare you are reviewing.

Can I request extra baggage in my quote?

Yes. State the bags and approximate weight you need so that the total can be compared with those requirements included.

Will my bags transfer during a connection?

That depends on the itinerary, airlines and ticket arrangements. Ask for the baggage transfer arrangements to be confirmed before booking.
